Phone device repayments explained

Many mobile bills contain two different recurring costs: the mobile service and repayment for a handset or other device. Treating them separately gives you a clearer picture of what the service itself costs.
Plan charge versus device charge
The service plan pays for the mobile service. A device repayment pays down the cost of the handset. Adding the two together may describe what leaves your account each month, but it does not make the combined amount the price of the mobile plan.
When repayments are nearly finished
If your bill explicitly shows only a small number of device repayments remaining, it is worth checking the following bills to confirm that the device charge disappears when expected.
Before changing providers
An outstanding device amount may matter if you change providers or arrangements. Confirm any payout amount and applicable terms directly with your provider rather than relying on an estimate.
