Why is my water bill so high?

A higher water bill can come from greater usage, more days in the billing period, changed charges, seasonal use, a meter-reading issue or a leak.
Compare daily water usage
Compare kilolitres used and the number of billing days with an earlier bill. Daily usage gives a better comparison when billing periods differ in length.
Check the meter reading
Look at the meter readings and whether the bill identifies an estimated reading. An estimate can affect how usage appears between billing periods.
Consider possible leaks
Unexpectedly high consumption can sometimes indicate a concealed or unnoticed leak. If the usage does not make sense, compare the meter with the bill and contact the relevant provider or council if needed.
