Electricity usage charges explained

BUSTYA electricity bill guide

Usage charges are the part of an electricity bill linked to how much electricity you use. Understanding the usage figure and rate makes it easier to see whether a higher bill came from consumption, pricing or both.

What is a kWh?

Electricity consumption is commonly measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Your bill shows how many kWh were recorded for the billing period and applies the relevant usage rate or rates.

Usage is different from the usage rate

Usage is the amount of electricity consumed. The usage rate is the price applied to that consumption. Your usage can stay similar while the usage portion of the bill rises if the applicable rate increases.

Compare daily usage as well as totals

Billing periods can contain different numbers of days. Average daily usage can therefore be more useful than comparing total kWh alone when you are trying to understand a change between bills.
