Electricity bill guide
How to compare electricity bills properly

Comparing only the amount due can hide why an electricity bill changed. A better comparison looks at comparable billing periods and the figures underneath the total.
1. Check the billing periods
First check the start and end dates and number of billing days. A longer billing period can produce a larger total even when average daily usage has not increased.
2. Compare average daily usage
Average daily usage helps normalise periods with different lengths. It can show whether consumption itself moved up or down rather than simply reflecting extra billing days.
3. Check rates and fixed charges
Compare usage rates and daily supply charges. If consumption is stable but charges rise, pricing can be part of the explanation.
4. Check meter reads and solar
Look for actual or estimated meter-read information. If you have solar, compare exports and credits too. These details can materially change the story behind the total.
