Gas bill terms explained

Understanding the terms on your gas bill makes it easier to work out why the total changed and whether two bills are genuinely comparable.
Gas usage (MJ)
Mains natural gas consumption is commonly shown in megajoules (MJ). Compare usage across similar billing periods before comparing totals alone.
Daily supply charge
A daily supply charge is a fixed charge applied for each day of the billing period, separate from the amount of gas used.
Usage rate
The usage rate is the price applied to gas consumption. Some plans can use different rate blocks, so the bill should be read as a whole.
Actual and estimated meter reads
A bill may identify whether the meter reading was actual or estimated. This can matter when explaining changes between billing periods.
LPG delivery and bottle charges
LPG invoices may show cylinders, litres delivered, refill or delivery charges and equipment-related charges rather than conventional mains-gas MJ usage.
