Internet bill terms explained

A plain-English guide to common terms and charges you may see when reviewing an Australian internet bill.
Billing period
The dates covered by the invoice. Check the billing period before comparing one internet bill with another.
Recurring plan charge
The regular charge for your internet service. Separating this from one-off items can make plan comparisons more meaningful.
Speed tier
The speed category associated with an internet plan. Speed matters when comparing alternatives because a cheaper plan may provide a different level of service.
Download speed
How quickly data can be delivered to your connection. Advertised or plan speeds do not necessarily mean you will experience that exact speed at all times.
Upload speed
How quickly data can be sent from your connection. This can matter for activities such as cloud backups and video calls.
Data allowance
The amount of data included in a plan where the service is not unlimited. Conditions after the allowance is reached vary by provider and plan.
Unlimited data
A plan described as having no fixed monthly data allowance, subject to the provider's plan terms and applicable policies.
Promotional price
A temporary discounted price or benefit. Check when a promotion ends and what the ongoing plan price will be.
One-off charge
A charge that is not part of the normal recurring plan price, such as an eligible setup, equipment or other once-only item.
Equipment charge
A charge relating to equipment supplied with or for the service, where applicable. It may be separate from the recurring internet plan.
Amount due
The amount payable on the invoice. It can include recurring service charges as well as other charges, credits or adjustments.
How to check an unexpectedly high internet bill
- Compare the billing dates and number of days on each invoice.
- Check whether an introductory discount has expired and identify the ongoing plan price.
- Separate modem, setup and other one-off charges from the monthly service cost.
- Confirm the speed tier and included features before comparing another provider.
