Phone bill terms explained

A plain-English guide to common terms and charges you may see on an Australian mobile phone bill.
Billing period
The dates covered by the bill. Checking the period helps when comparing charges from one bill to the next.
Mobile plan charge
The recurring charge for the mobile service or plan. Other items on the bill may be separate from this amount.
Device repayment
A payment towards a handset or other device where the device is being paid off over time. It can appear alongside the mobile service charge.
Remaining device payments
Where shown by the provider, this indicates how many scheduled device repayments remain. Terms for early payout or cancellation depend on the provider agreement.
Data allowance
The amount of mobile data included in a plan. What happens after the allowance is reached depends on the plan and provider.
Promotional discount
A temporary discount or benefit applied to a service. Check its duration and the ongoing price that applies afterwards.
Credit
An amount applied to reduce the account balance or charges. The reason for a credit should be shown or explained by the provider.
Adjustment
A change made to the account or bill that is outside the usual recurring charge. Check the bill description if an adjustment is unfamiliar.
One-off charge
A non-recurring charge that may relate to a particular purchase, service or account event.
Amount due
The amount the provider says is payable by the due date. It may combine plan charges, device payments, other items, credits and adjustments.
