Why is my gas bill so high?

BUSTYA gas bill guide

A higher gas bill can come from increased usage, a longer billing period, higher usage or supply rates, seasonal heating demand, or a meter read that differs from an earlier estimate.

Compare usage before the total

Check the billing days and gas usage against an earlier comparable bill. A larger total does not necessarily mean your rates increased if the bill covers more days or your household used more gas.

Check gas rates and supply charges

Compare the usage rate and daily supply charge with an older bill. If usage is similar but the amount payable increased, changed rates or fixed charges may explain part of the difference.

Check the meter read

Look for actual or estimated meter-read information. An estimate followed by an actual read can change the amount charged even when your day-to-day habits have not changed dramatically.

Mains gas and LPG are different

LPG bottle exchange, bulk refill and metered LPG should not be treated as the same service as mains natural gas. BUSTYA keeps these supply models separate so its bill history remains like-for-like.

Gas bill increase checklist

  • Compare total billing days and average daily usage, not just the amount due.
  • Check the usage rate and daily supply charge against the previous invoice.
  • Look for an estimated meter read followed by an actual read.
  • For LPG, compare like-for-like cylinder, refill or metered supply and include delivery or equipment fees.

See the gas and LPG guide for supply-model differences and price comparison considerations.
